Seismic engineering, concrete and steel

Explore earthquake engineering, reinforced concrete, structural steel, connections, ductility and buildable detailing.

Connect behaviour and detailing

Seismic engineering conversations are stronger when the intended structural behaviour and the detailing questions are discussed together. Identify the lateral system, the load path and the behaviour you are investigating. Explain whether the question concerns analysis, member behaviour, a connection or coordination of the drawings.

Include the relevant context

For reinforced concrete, steel and composite structures, share the applicable jurisdiction and the exact edition of any design standard you are using. Different standards, amendments and project requirements can lead to different discussions. Include material assumptions and the stage of the project without exposing client information.

Compare reasoning, not only results

When comparing analysis methods or proposed details, describe what each approach assumes and what evidence would support the choice. Useful topics include diaphragm idealisation, connection behaviour, reinforcement congestion, fabrication constraints and communication between analysis and detailing teams. Bring calculations, references and review questions that others can follow.

Questions to bring to the community

  • How do you communicate intended seismic behaviour to a detailing team?
  • What information makes a connection review easier?
  • How do you document differences between applicable code editions?
